Senior Presentation Reflection

PART I: Two-Hour Presentation
(1) Two-Hour Presentation Student Assessment

P

Why?
I talked enough and met my time giving a lot of depth information of what my EQ was saying and what I do in the fire explores program.

(2) What are you most proud of in your 2 hour presentation and why?
I'm most proud of my activity which was the small obstacle course because it shows how W.C. Firefighters compete against one another. Everyone seemed to enjoy my activity as well so that made me feel more confident while they were performing it.

PART II: Overall Senior Project Experience

(3) What do you think you did well on in the project? What could you have done better? Please explain.

I think I've done well in my service learning, by joining something that will teach me hands on training will real professionals. It was a challenge for me to get in but I managed to work through it my strongest and it has given me a plan to have a job in the future; becoming a firefighter.

(4) What is your EQ and what is the best answer to your EQ?

EQ: What is most important in becoming a successful fireman for the West Covina Fire Department?
Best Answer: West Covina Fire Explores Post 465

(5) How has the last month of culminating events (e.g I-Search, Two-Hour, Exit etc) affected your answer to your EQ? Has it changed? Why or why not?

My I- Search was good, I was able to explain why and how my best answer was W.C.F.E. The coming of my 2hr I was nervous because I thought I wasn't going to meet my time, but that was the only reason because when I did my Exit Interview I got a P+ and it made me feel like I could accomplish my 2hr presentation quickly.

(6) What suggestions do you have in order to improve the senior project?

I like how the senior project was set up, we all went at a certain day at a good flow. But I didn't like how it was so soon, it made everybody all stressful and whatnot, but overall good.

(7) Overall Senior Project Assessment

P

Why?

I deserve a low P maybe because I feel like I could have actually ask sooner if I could have brought the fire engines because I would've let the class look inside and then my activity could have actually been more realistic. Other than the fire engines, I had the obstacle course pretty challenging for some students which was a reason I deserve a P. Also, I talked about the depth of my reasoning and how my best answer became my best answer which was joining the Explores.

Interpretive
There are many important procedures I learned from joining the Explores, but most importantly I learned and still learning the brotherhood of the firefighters and how they work together. This experience I'm still gaining  makes me feel very intelligent because I'm working in the fire departments with each firefighter and learning all of the proper skills needed.

Applied
My service learning helped me so much to answer my essential question because the fire explores is very opened to work in West Covina and shows how to apply to get started with a fire career in the city. Working with the professional firefighters has made every Saturday to be a physical, educational day for me because in each department we do different drills and knowing each drill, while studying, and improving my 'firefighter' skills will make me be one step away becoming a fireman for West Covina.

Lesson Plan Questions

Sponge Activity: I will be talking to them about how it is important to be standing at "Attention" and will demonstrate the proper standing. Also, I will show them how we stand when we are not standing at attention, when we're just relaxing and listening. Then I'll ask questions to the audience about my topic to see what they know about the fire field.

Introduction: For my introduction I will explain my EQ in great detail what each word means; "What is most important in becoming a successful fireman for the West Covina Fire Department?" I will talk about how I first wanted to become a fireman, then about my agenda of the day; discussing my answers thoroughly. After, explain my first answer which is joining the W. Covina fire explores and how it is becoming a Boy Scout of America, then, build up from my first to my second answer which is keeping a physique diet. I'll talk more in depth about why it is very important to have my two answers and the background to them.

Foundation: I will talk about how joining the fire explores made me more enthusiastic about the fire field and how I want it to be my life career. I'll talk about how it is recommended to become an EMT before applying as a firefighter, due to the fact that 85% and higher are emergency calls. Then talk about how I'm most interested in becoming a firefighter for West Covina because it is my hometown and I'm familiarized with the city and the cities firefighters and the steps of how I'll be accomplishing my goal.

Answer 1: Keeping a physique diet
Answer 2: Fire Explores
  • My first and second answer are going to be having the same activity because they're both somewhat alike and what firefighters do to maintain a physique diet is train hard to build muscle, as well as the firefighters do the same proper training. The activity will be an obstacle course having to do with speed and strength.
Conclusion: I will conclude my presentation by explaining my most important answer which will be fire explores. Joining the Fire Explores gives you hands on training with all the firefighters in W. Covina and it leads you in a better organization being surrounded by the brotherhood, plus, the education given from all the fire departments in the city.

Decorating: I am not so sure how to decorate the room. May be having my explores post number and in big writing have Firefighters!

Resources: I will just need help on the water hoses I will be bringing in for my activity and how I can get something heavy (a heavy bag or something), as well for my activity.

Independent Study 2

1. Log: Going to the Fire Explores every week on Saturday for about 5 hours, except on academy days we stay there until 14 hours: 02/26 (academy) 03/05 (academy), 03/12 (no academy), 03/19 (academy), 03/26 (no academy), 04/02 (no academy), 04/09 (no academy), 04/16 (academy), 04/23 (academy)

2. Posted Evidence
(The fire explores schedule for the certified EMT's)

3. Complete LIA.

 Literal

a.) “I, Michael Hazlett, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

b.) I joined the fire explores at West Covina Post 465. At the explores we work as a team and did a lot of training with most of the equipment. I learned how to refill an empty oxygen take bottle and use it properly for the S.C.B.A.s, learned how to tie down a patient in a risky situation on mountains safely onto the basket bed where the helicopters take away, learned how to raise the 28ft ladder by myself, learned the variety of techniques used on the S.C.B.A.s to get around small spaces, learned how to tie the rope onto the equipment so the firefighter on top of the building can use them, and importantly how to use the gurney, stair-chair and neck brace for patients.

Interpretive

Every weekend on Saturday I would wake up super early to go to the explores and haven't yet skipped a day. I would stay on Saturday (regular days) for 5 hrs and (academy days) 14 hours which would sometimes be random depending on what our captain explains to us.

Applied

Joining the program answered my EQ definitely because I'm trying to understand what it takes to become a firefighter in West Covina and my explores post is in the city so it's perfect; learning about the brotherhood of all the firefighters in each station. It seems to me to be a successful fireman for W.C. you need to be willing to give all your time and take any classes required to get into the fire field. The Fire Academy is one class needed, but before that you need to be certified as an EMT which is very time consuming and hard. My captains help out a lot because they're both EMT's and have told me a great ROP center in W.C. to become an EMT so the summer I'm going to go there and give all my time to studying. (:

Rationale

For my creative expression I was going to draw the inside of my house looking in it from the roof area. I am going to have each room and I will put fire extinguishers where they should be placed just in case of a fire; knowing the different structured houses to know how to eliminate the fire and protect your or any family is very important. Need to be able to know all the different structures each have.
